Sason Gir aka Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary in Gujrat is the only place in Asia where Asiatic lions are found in natural wild habitat. So, it is one of the significant places of biodiversity in Asia, including various species of plants as well.
Unlimited hunting of Asiatic lions reduced the number of this species in India in the end of 19th century. Then this forest in Gujrat was established as a sanctuary by the Nawab of Junagadh when only a few Asiatic lions were left here. Officially it was a National Park since 1965. The total area of this forest is 1412 square kilometre, where 258 square kilometre is reserved as National Park and rest is wildlife sanctuary. This forest is a part of the dry deciduous forests region across the states Gujrat, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.
Wildlife in Gir : The good news for ecosystem, zoologists and nature lovers is the number of Asiatic lions in Gujrat is growing. Gir is famous for Asiatic lions, but this dry forest is also the natural habitat of various animals like jungle cat, striped hyena, Indian gray mongoose, nilgai, chital, antilope, Indian cobra, vultures, Indian eagle-owls etc.
Best season to visit : December to May. It remains closed from 16th June to 15th October (during monson).
Best possible route : Gir is approx 2282 km from Kolkata via Asian Highway 1. Rajkot rail station is near to Gir. It is well connected to other major cities in India including Kolkata. Also by flight and rail, Ahmedabad will be a good option to reach, then one may reach Gir by car.
