Sunderbans is the home to numerous wildlife species and uncountable flora & fauna. The dense forest of semi-submerged mangroves, serene canals, meandering waterways, and pristine natural beauty has made it a popular tourist destination in West Bengal. Plus, this forest is the land of the Royal Bengal Tigers and in the year 1966, Sunderbans has been declared as a wildlife sanctuary.
In 1973, the core area of Sundarban was created as Sundarban Tiger Reserve. In 1977, it was created as a wild life sanctuary. In 1978, it constituted as Reserve forest . The current core area was established as a National park on 4th May,1984. Recognising the region and it's unique biodiversity, this national park was listed as a World Heritage Site in 1985. Later, the entire Sundarban was declared as a Bio Sphere Reserve in 1989.
